About Art Gunn

Pop art, spontaneous realism & 1950s nostalgia with Heidi and Peter – That’s ART GUNN. Versatile, uninhibited, spontaneous.

The internationally active artist Thomas Kogler a.k.a. ART GUNN was born in 1985 in the Austrian state of Styria. He’s been producing works of pop art and spontaneous realism for the past 7 years, creating his unique style among other aspects based on his passion for cultish cartoon strips and his admiration for many role models from whithin the scene, such as Max Wiedemann and Alec Monopoly. It’s this multitude of influences that, of course paired with his own creativity, creates the unique style of ART GUNN, stemming from his preferred use of acrylic colours, spray paint, paintbrush style and neon colours, all of which have been definig features of his works up to this point.

Just as everything in life is subject to constant change, so is art, and so does ART GUNN. Using experimental materials such as epoxy rasin, neon colours, blacklight, varnish paint and even gilded Dollar bills, ART GUNN is changing according to the ongoing change in arts – Because anything is possible, but standstill is never an option, a principle, that ART GUNN inherited from his grandfather, who also allegedly passed on his passion for arts and crafts.

POP ART

Almost literally screaming, being colourful, lively and turbulent just as well as passionately provocative – It’s all of this and more which makes up pop art in its classical sense. It raises questions about the relationship between art and reality, disrupts conventions and takes pride from its stubbornness. ART GUNN’s interpretation of Pop art is mainly focused on the abstract, without neglecting the clarity and objectivity of this art form.

SPONTANEOUS REALISM

Uncontrollably intuitive, abstract and always including an inherent element of rebellion – This is what spontaneous realism is about. A form of art which often comes in larger than life portraits, having numerous layers of  picture overflowing each other. This art form is spontaneous in the sense of being created through unannounced inspiration in a brute and entirely unplanned manner. The moment is both key and cornerstone to style and work. The outcome is usually of very personal nature and related to emotion. Realism refers to the reality surrounding the artist, which he or she is seeking to depict.
